Create more opportunities for DHH children academically, athletically, and socially by creating a more supportive environment through teachers, students, and coaches who know how to effectively help their peers.
What Do We Do?
We travel across the country, giving presentations that outline how to become better equipped to support a DHH child in the classroom, at home, or on the field. Our material highlights personal experiences and provides simple solutions to many of the real-life problems my brother encountered in his childhood.
One of our biggest hopes is to raise awareness for kids who are hard of hearing. Since it is an invisible disability, it is all too common that kids get bullied, especially at a young age. This is why we seek to offer quick and simple education that can eliminate frustration and create better environments for coaches, teachers, and peers.
Hearos Of Communication - An Introduction
Throughout his schooling, my brother has been given assigned seats next to fans, been placed in locations where his deaf ear is facing the teacher, left lost in class work when he can't hear the lesson and threatened to be punished for his disability. Consequently, this has left him in the dark for most of his academic career. This problem is grounded in the fact that most teachers working at private schools have never encountered students like him before. As corroborated by a group called Supporting Success for Children with Hearing Loss, one of the greatest problems in the education of DHH students is their teachers “pretending to understand students with hearing loss when they really don’t.” This is something I hope to change through the Hearo project.

One of the most common challenges Catholic schools face when working with children with disabilities is the fear of not having enough funding to welcome all students into their classrooms. Here, we have displayed recoreses that may be helpful when pursuing these funds!
With a brother who has been affected by hearing loss, I have seen how difficult it is for DHH children to be able to participate in many activities that we often take for granted. I know that this would have been life changing to my family durring my brothers early childhood and hopefully this project can positivly impact the lives of others. Through this initiative, we seek to bring a better option for both DHH kids and their peers to spread awareness and create situations in which they can succeed.
